Methodology

The test session will be conducted in four distinct modes:

  • We will evaluate the functioning of the memory frequency by default with the specifications declared by the manufacturer of the plate. The purpose of this test is to evaluate if the kit conforms to the stated operating frequency. The test results should not be considered from the point of view of performance, but are carried out only to get a stability test of the entire system. At this stage, as the plate voltage exceeds the maximum value recommended by Intel Ivy Bridge platform, try the minimum voltage VDRAM able to run the memory at full stability with frequencies and timings declared.
  • The next session will be used to measure the performance of memories and possibly highlight any abnormality related to their operation. These tests will be performed first in finding the maximum operating frequency according to Cas used, applying operating voltages more suitable for the type of ICs used and, once obtained the maximum operating frequencies, we will evaluate the performance of bandwidth in such a way as to make the system as transparent as possible with respect to the measured values. In this test series, the system (motherboard and CPU, in particular) must have a minimum influence on the measurements of bandwidth and latency, in such a way that these are the most truthful possible to allow, if repeated in equivalent systems, to obtain results similar. The values obtained in this test show that the performance of the RAM are able to ensure to the system, regardless of the motherboard and CPU used, for the same operating conditions.
  • We will analyze the behavior overclocking memory with the best settings obtained in the previous tests.
  • In conclusion, we will test the memories in DDR3L specification to see if they are able to operate under the conditions specified by the JEDEC standard ” Low Voltage ” .

The benchmarks used for testing the stability, and bandwidth are: LinX 0.64, 4:31 OCCT (Linpack mode) Prime 95 and held for at least 20 minutes, as well as various tests measuring bandwidth with AIDA64 and Sisoft Sandra 2012, to verify that the performances are in line with the settings used.


Conclusions

With the introduction on the market of XPG V2, ADATA has confirmed, once again, to be at the highest levels in the production of high-performance memory. The kit arrived in the newsroom has proven stable and efficient when all the tests we conducted, preferring rather high operating voltages and frequencies as shown in the overclocking tests, but unable to safely operate in line with the specific Low Voltage. Thanks to the new production of ICs SK hynix MFR, the XPG V2 will be able to fully exploit the performance of the IMC integrated in the recent CPU Haswell.

The special profile of the aluminum heat sinks, as well as having proven efficient in heat dissipation, sports a look very attractive by virtue of a gray livery interrupted by inserts of silver; for those who want to get out from the usual, we point out that it is also available in yellow gold.

This new line of memories, ADATA offers a wide range of frequencies reaching up to 3100MHz; of course, the benefits come at a cost and, in our opinion, for those who have particular demands. The object of this test kit is the best compromise between price and performance.
